Readers are calling Kitchen Canary a 'page turner.'  Set in Boston in the mid-eighteen hundreds, Kitchen Canary follows two young Irish immigrants who come to America to work for the Brennan family in Boston.  The naïve women are unaware that employers considered kitchen canaries, their domestics, as their property.  When the women suffer violation, they create a tangle of lies to hide their guilt and shame.

The main characters have their own voice in the book, and we learn about Mr. Brennan's life as an abandoned child in London and his struggle for success.  His wife, Rose, is a recluse, and when she speaks, we understand why she has taken to her room.

The characters' stories are interwoven with fascinating historical facts during this post-Civil War era.
