The Young Lions - An adult adventure story by Tony Maxwell

An African Adventure Story

‘Hello Aunt Emma, I’m glad to be here too.’ She was tall and beautiful, with a fine figure only barely concealed by a diaphanous nightdress and a carelessly open dressing gown. Her long dark auburn hair cascaded over her shoulders and her pale, attractive face, wide set eyes and full sensuous lips took his breath away. Robert could not help staring at her in frank amazement. He found it difficult to equate this alluring woman with the tall, awkward girl he vaguely remembered while a young boy at Fairlee Manor in Scotland.

Action, adventure and erotic entanglements loom large in young Robert Hamilton’s future as he seeks to make his fortune in the rough and tumble world of the Johannesburg goldfields in the closing years of the nineteenth century.
Robert’s business interests and adventures in the wilds of South Africa, bring him into close contact with the Boer peoples of the Transvaal Republic. As the threat of a British invasion looms large over the country, his support for the Boer cause finds him on the opposing side to his fellow uitlanders – foreigners. He is dismayed to discover that both of his brothers have enlisted in Canadian regiments ready to fight on the side of Britain in the Anglo-Boer War.

In this sequel to The Sheep Walker’s Daughter, the tables are turned and it is Dee who encourages Father Mike to be bold and take the gift that God is offering him. But the Anglican priest has a self-image and a family history to overcome.

What reviewers are saying:

…Another beautifully written story that is compassionately told. The story is so real it could have been on the headlines of the Los Gatos times in the 60's
…a wonderful story of family, repairing and rebuilding relationships
…romance and yes heartache
…suspense, mystery, neighbors ready to throw stones at the 'glass' house

A good book club choice.

Seed Money — A science fiction/mystery by Cyndie Shaffstall

Dangling from the puppeteer's strings.

By 2062, we’ve made a real mess of things. Though engineers, inventors, and business people alike scrambled to develop a solution before we were completely wiped out by an irradiated atmosphere, global warming reduced our inhabited space by half. The chosen solution became a temporary fix at best as it was burdened by the weight of unchecked population growth.

With our workplace neutered by the Genderless Act, frustration grew and we came to embrace trystrooms where anything goes, everything is enjoyed, and it’s all kept secret by the Privacy Act.

Today, innovation and businesses thrive in an environment where unemployment and poverty have been eliminated, due largely to the Government Reorganization and Realignment Effort and business fostered by the GRRE enables one group of brilliant young designers to reclaim some of the ever-shrinking space—but bringing it to market exposes manipulation and corruption on a devastating, worldwide scale.

A New Orchid Myth - Narrative poetry by Helene Piilibosian

A New Orchid Myth by Helene Pilibosian

Straddling the pages of this book, you will consider the immigration of a married couple to Earth from the planet Tome. Mr. and Mrs. Everydream harness the different kind of civilization. They have much to do to get used to ways of life in New York City, where they have settled. However, extensive travel within the states gives them a broader landscape and the readers bright effects of narrative poetry, modern poetry but quite understandable.

Sunflowers and orchids gain importance in this fantasy-narrative. The sunflower seeds provide great nourishment here and on their home planet. Orchids also exist there but are wilted and becoming sterile as are the people. What is needed there is optimism, and the red on orchids seems to symbolize it.

The worry is that people from the home planet will kidnap their daughter Taralee to try to revitalize their own system with the red on her birthmark. Eventually the Everydreams develop a plan to send orchids to the planet, thus saving it and themselves. Then forgiveness rules.

Poems describe the best attributes of many of the states they visit. For comic relief, the characters Plastic and Polyester appear occasionally and either comment or run around New York City. Manhattan and California win for description of American places. There are a few Armenian characters in the background – Mr. and Mrs. Garmirian and Maral Laramian among them.

Duchesses: Living in 21st Century Britain - by Jane Dismore

http://www.amazon.com/Duchesses-Living-21st-Century-Britain-ebook/dp/B00O0FZ4T8

For some the title Duchess evokes the grandeur of stately homes but for others it’s about unearned privileges. But above all, it is a title that many feel is historic with little relevance in today’s society. However, in April 2011 the title was taken out of its antechamber, dusted off and deposited firmly in the High Street and on the internet: giving an old title to a young lady as twenty-first century as Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge, was to make it topical, even desirable, again.

But despite the Queen awarding Prince William a dukedom, the future for dukes, especially non-royal, is not bright. There are only twenty-four left in Britain today: they, and therefore their duchesses, are an endangered species. Yet little is known about these women or what their relevance is in today’s Britain.

In this unique book ten of Britain’s remaining non-royal duchesses talk of their lives and their roles in the twenty-first century. Most never speak publicly; those who do seldom speak about themselves. To be granted an interview was therefore a huge privilege. Each Duchess has also selected a favourite predecessor in the role, providing a colourful gallery from the 17th to the 20th century.

Treasure of the Battersea Bluffs - A time travel fantasy by Sarah Norkus

http://www.amazon.com/Treasure-Battersea-Bluffs-Sarah-Norkus-ebook/dp/B00TIYVQ3Y

Josh is a young man out of time. Unaware that he has travelled back in time to the 18th century, he waves the hand clutching his cell phone back and forth in irritation as he tries to locate a signal...

In the old factory district of Petersburg, near the Appomattox River, sits a rundown Palladian Villa known as Battersea. Hidden beneath the floorboards of the east wing lies a skeleton that hasn’t been disturbed for two hundred and forty years. During the Battersea Days celebration, a panicked mare charges through the villa and opens a hole in the floorboards with her plunging hooves.  Sixteen year-old Emily Grace and her boyfriend, Josh, stand frozen beside a display table as the horse is captured. Curiosity overshadowing caution, Em steps over to the hole and peers inside.  Spying something in the cavity, Em reaches under the planks and unknowingly grasps the delicate finger bones of the skeleton.  A vision explodes in her mind. A young girl in colonial style clothes struggles with a man twice her size. The man slaps her and she falls, hitting her head on a stack of bricks. Em jerks her hand back in horror as she begs, “no, God, no.” She pushes to her feet and vertigo hits her with a vengeance. She staggers a few steps, collapses to the floor, and passes out.

In Treasure of the Battersea Bluffs, Em and Josh are unwittingly whisked back in time to the eighteenth century.  As the teens struggle to save the life of the young girl from Em’s vision, their interference incurs the wrath of her would be assailant, Angus Blackburn, and inadvertently draws the teens into his obsessive search for a Scottish Lord’s stolen gems.

The Hundred Year Marathon, an International Diplomacy Publication by Michael Pillsbury

http://www.amazon.com/Hundred-Year-Marathon-Strategy-Replace-Superpower-ebook/dp/B00IWUI7B4

One of the U.S. government’s leading China experts reveals the hidden strategy fueling that country’s rise – and how Americans have been seduced into helping China overtake us as the world’s leading superpower.

For more than forty years, the United States has played an indispensable role helping the Chinese government build a booming economy, develop its scientific and military capabilities, and take its place on the world stage, in the belief that China’s rise will bring us cooperation, diplomacy, and free trade. But what if the "China Dream" is to replace us, just as America replaced the British Empire, without firing a shot?

Based on interviews with Chinese defectors and newly declassified, previously undisclosed national security documents, The Hundred-Year Marathon reveals China’s secret strategy to supplant the United States as the world’s dominant power, and to do so by 2049, the one-hundredth anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic. Michael Pillsbury, a fluent Mandarin speaker who has served in senior national security positions in the U.S. government since the days of Richard Nixon and Henry Kissinger, draws on his decades of contact with the "hawks" in China’s military and intelligence agencies and translates their documents, speeches, and books to show how the teachings of traditional Chinese statecraft underpin their actions. He offers an inside look at how the Chinese really view America and its leaders – as barbarians who will be the architects of their own demise.

Journey - a paranormal romance by Claudy Conn

Journey takes us into a world of secrets, witches, immortals and another world's politics.
It introduces us to Riley and Finn...who it seems fate has intended to meet, but, will their worlds
keep them apart.

An excerpt:

He wore a smile that was more a cool smirk, and it boldly shouted, I’ve got it all, and I don’t care. I am rarely intimidated by this sort, and yet, there I was, right from my head to my toes, ready to hide and watch him from a hidden corner. Absolutely ridiculous.
I tried to turn away, but not before I took another survey and put him down to memory. I liked the way his thick, blue-black hair was styled in layers of shiny waves, some of which fell across his forehead and over his ears. I swallowed as my appraisal then determined that not only was he very tall—well over six feet—but he also had strong, football-man shoulders. All at once, I was oddly reminded of Wolverine, predatory and more than capable.
He was dressed in an expensive black sports jacket over what looked like a gray silk T-shirt. His black pants were also silky and hung over his hips in masculine lines. His green eyes opened wide and held a glint of something undefined as he looked me over, and I felt my cheeks suddenly burn. Did I say undefined? That’s not right. Those green eyes said, Bed … going to take you to bed.

The Weathering of Strawberry Ben - a novel & poetry by Ted L Carroll

www.tedcarrollauthor.wix.com/buythebook

Would Strawberry Ben kill himself? .....Fiction and poetry intertwine, celebrating the naturally awful capacities of human depths (and heights) via young Strawberry Ben's daily dance with despair.

Much of the novel is autobiographic.
So, "What's the book about?"
Pointedly, “The Weathering of Strawberry Ben” is the story of a man (Tom) who survives being raped - as a child. Now, grown, he almost (accidentally) kills a young boy (Ben).
Tom had barely survived his own life! Now he’s nearly taken the life of a kid! Markedly, Tom experiences a transformational spiritual awakening in the journey of discovering the love of his life, his now-wife, Em.
The plot centers around the boy, nick-named: Strawberry Ben. His unlikely mentor and brother figure is Tom and, of course, Tom's lovely wife Em - who loves young Benjamin as her own son. Furthermore, old man Vanilla Rick adds a twist to the story and adds a shining tight bow of paradox near The End.
Complementing an unrelenting experience of darkness and despair "The Weathering of Strawberry Ben" is the story of victory over death, depression, and addiction as well as one’s capacity for unconditional love and the practice of contemplative awareness.
Unsurprisingly, the story is morbid, however, the story of Strawberry Ben is also one of utmost commitment to principles – especially to intimate trust and undying love - the deepest and most worthwhile paths of perceptive living.
From boyhood rape to loss of parents, from demonic dependencies to poems of desperation, from sadness and soul-thievery to divine grace and forgiveness, Ben's story is also that of Tom and Em’s, the couple whose lives are so undeniably intertwined with the young man's that basic loyalty to family and friends demands being reevaluated.
Finally, Rick adds a twist to the story that leaves the reader unashamedly wanting more. In the meantime, and throughout most the book, one cannot help but wonder: “Would Strawberry Ben kill himself?”

Echo of the High Kings - epic fantasy by Kal Sprigg

http://www.amazon.com/Echo-High-Kings-Eoriel-Saga-ebook/dp/B00M9Q6VL0

Echo of the High Kings was written while I was deployed to Afghanistan with the US Army.  I spent a lot of time working out not just the magic system, but the cultures, economics, and history of the world and how it applied to the characters and their actions.  I think that the world-building pays off in that the characters are products of their world, a world where science and mathematics is as much a part of the world as dragons, god, and demons.

That Summer in Normandy - a historical novel by Rosemary Rudland

'The amplified telephone ring was deafening. Almost alarming.
'Dammit!' said Nelly. Perched on the side of the bath, she adjusted a towel round her relatively still slim figure and groped for the mobile placed  inches away on the washbasin....'

A few hours later, there is suspense, intrigue and tension around every corner as Nelly Spencer, an English animal welfare enquirer, working in northern France, is sent to investigate an isolated farm.
She expected to find a miserable dog, cat, horse or cow, but what  she discovers hidden in an ancient barn is something quite different and the start of an adventure that will change her life forever.

When Nelly encounters Louise, an elderly farm lady, she is slowly drawn into the somber memory of war-torn France. At the same time she is confronted with the uncertainty surrounding her own childhood.
With three intertwining stories of love and betrayal, woven against a backcloth of wartime heroism, this  moving, poignant read, combines historical reality and creative fiction. A fast moving novel stirred up and soaked in evocative details of life in rural Normandy. With salt  and spirit from the stricken Landing Beaches to spicy present day.

The Duchess of the Shallows - a fantasy novel by Neil McGarry and Daniel Ravipinto

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B007HTUXWC

The Duchess of the Shallows – A fresh twist on fantasy

Marina Kell knows what it means to be forgotten.

Once she had a family, an honored name, a lavish home and an assured future. Then came the night of fire and all of it was taken–her father, her brother, her sister, her life.

Then she was called Duchess, and she lived in a baker's shop, in a cramped room she shared with two girls who were not her sisters, raised by two people who were not her parents. Then came the letter, and she lost even that small comfort.

It is a common tale in the fog-bound city of Rodaas. There are many who have found themselves fallen through the cracks. There is Duchess' best friend, Lysander the ganymede, a graceful ‘escort’ to those of better means. There is Minette, the mistress of the Vermillion brothel and obsessive collector of secrets. There are the wretched poor of the Deeps, the working underclass of the Shallows, and the beggars who cry for alms along the Godswalk. Foreigners, women of ambition, men who love men–the powerless and unremembered all go through their daily lives unheeded by the wealthy and powerful who rule from the top of the great hill.

But unlike her fellow unfortunates, Duchess has a chance. For with the letter that ended her life with the baker came a single brass coin with the image of a snake devouring its own tail: an invitation to join a secret society of thieves, spies and rumormongers known as the Grey, who stands supreme in a city where corruption and lies are common coin. They are as forgotten and invisible as the rest, but they lay claim to a subtle power that can shift the fortunes of high and low alike.

To join their ranks, Duchess must call upon both memories of her old life and the resources of the new. She must make an uncertain alliance with Minette, match wits with a masked prophet, and, ultimately, face down the most feared man of the city's slums.

And when she is finished, the city will never, ever forget her.

A Life Before Sleep - scifi by M. Stephen Stewart

She has a plan--keep her mouth shut and stay in The Merchant's good graces no matter what happens. But all that changes when Vanay realizes she may lose more than her freedom.

------------------------------

As a Science Fiction author, I love to use the genre as a means to explore the extremes of humanity and society. So, like the main title in its series, We Are Watching, the story in A Life Before Sleep is inspired by the NSA leaks from Edward Snowden, where it was revealed that the organization has been freely spying on US citizens. I wanted to take that to the furthest possible conclusion by creating a society where people are being monitored at all times in their daily lives.

My goal was to explore how that would affect culture and interpersonal relationships, as well as what a citizen's role becomes in a country where knowledge and information are so tightly controlled by one organization, that the simple act of learning something without that organization's approval is a serious crime. In writing A Life Before Sleep, I realized that most people would begrudgingly accept those laws as a necessary sacrifice for safety and security in a deeply troubled world. But, there would be a spirited few, with an assortment of motivations, who would actively work against those laws.

In the case of Doctor Samantha Vanay, the story's main character, her primary motivation is money and proving to other people that she's superior. Of course, as the story goes on, those motivations are examined, and ultimately called into question when she's forced to make a decision that she never thought she'd have to make.

Contrastingly, Vanay's assistant, Rachel MacArthur, isn't driven forward by pride and greed the same way Vanay is. Sure, Rachel loves the money she makes (working in the illegal information trade is extremely lucrative), but she's idealistic. She'd do the same thing for much less pay, simply because she doesn't agree with Planetary Link's control on knowledge.

In putting the two of them together, there's wonderful tension. They treat each other as friends, they have the same goal, but they want to reach that goal for different reasons, and each has a different "end-game," which makes the other consider why they became information brokers in the first place. So, when Planetary Link's Security division catches wind of a new, dangerous push into really forbidden knowledge by Vanay, things get intense between the doctor and her assistant.

The Unraveling of Shelby Forrest - romance by Donna Friess

http://www.amazon.com/Unraveling-Shelby-Forrest-Donna-Friess-ebook/dp/B00QXO0UGG

A testimony to the power of love

It's no surprise to learn that Donna's debut novel has been selected as 'Spirited Woman's Pick of the Year'. Having previously read her much acclaimed autobiography, Cry the Darkness, I  expected another  gut-grabbing story. But this poignant book unravels even more conflicting emotions: an adoptee's right to know and a mother's right to privacy. To turn psychological fiction into an intriguing plot through a meander of unexpected events requires indepth knowledge of the subject. But Dr Donna Friess, life coach and grief counselor, is no amateur at using key words to disentangle crippling emotions.  The Unraveling of Shelby Forrest is a testimony to the power of love, and makes a perfect read. Stolen - Malaysia Airlines Flight 370: The Perfect Crime by Colin Rousseaux

http://www.amazon.com/Stolen-Malaysia-Airlines-Flight-Perfect-ebook/dp/B00RUAX0YG

Gone are the days of footnotes and references!  Gone are the days of media embedded in the text.  Now we can go to the source, so this ebook uses hyperlinks to media on the web. The hyperlinks take you to videos and documents for further information and visual explanation, somewhat having the best of the web integrated into the book.  For  example, if you want to see how to fly a 777 on autopilot then take the course. If you don’t know what the electronic and equipment bay looks like, then click and you have the captain show you around the avionics of the plane. DOn’t know what hypoxia is then take the Air Force training video. Need documentation on the Kimberly process, child soldiers or parts availability then just click the hyperlink.

The response time is excellent with a Kindle reader running the MOBI format. The videos are short enough not to interfere with the story. Within the text hyperlinks help navigation within the book.

Many have asked me why I wrote this book. The answer is curiosity as to what happened to Malaysia Airlines flight 370. Initially, I thought that the aircraft had probably met a watery demise in the Gulf of Thailand. Later when the news came out that the plane had turned to head west after its identification had been disabled; it became obvious that the plane was still airborne when it disappeared from civilian air traffic control screens. Further information that it had been tracked by the Malaysian military heading up the Straits of Malacca indicated that the plane was still aloft and must have been commandeered for some purpose.
How does a plane just disappear leaving relatives and loved ones behind to imagine permanent separation of the human treasure on board? It is now December 2014, and I sit here trying to comprehend the pain those abandoned by MH370. What could have possibly happened to this oversized lofty twin-engine liner? If it had crashed, where are the floating cushions, teddy bears and personal effects?

The coffee houses still hum with various conspiracy theories submitted to explain a cause and the destiny of the disappearance of MH370. Sparks of intrigue fuel seething blogs multiplying so as to consume us all at the expense of global news. Conspiracy theories blossomed, but rarely addressed the underlying question of why someone would want to steal MH370.
“It’s a hijacking!” stated the media, but where are the demands? If taking the plane were for political reasons, wouldn’t communication have been made to claim responsibility for the hijacking and give a list of demands?

Perhaps the detectives training book of crime gives us a hint to the solution, where a crime requires a motive, means and opportunity. So, we know the means and the opportunity, or at least we have some information of their part of the triad, but what about the motive if it were not an accident?
So what could be the possible motive for such a crime? Follow the money. Greed and money are bloodthirsty brothers slaughtering all those in their path. Those bitten succumb to the evil twins lose their morals and will go to no ends to satiate their needs. So how does this story feed the duo?
I came to the conclusion that the plane itself was the diamond of desire, a gem essential for this tale. If sold as parts the perpetrators could potentially make hundreds of millions of dollars from this crime, as the parts are of greater value than the whole. I found out that parts for the Boeing 777 are particularly scarce at present, making this a plausible motive.
A Boeing 777 is not easy to hide and requires a long runway, so I search for abandoned runways within the fuel range of MH370. I struck oil and the tale began.
What follows is unadulterated fiction built around the scarce but publically known facts. For those still yearning to find out the fate of their loved ones, I hope that they are found safely rather than resting in the depths of the Mariana Trench.

Counting Stars (Donnelley Brothers Book 1) - A Contemporary Romance by Alannah Carbonneau

http://www.amazon.com/Counting-Stars-Donnelley-Brothers-Novel-ebook/dp/B00NN3U52O

"I think it's safe to say I'm a bit of a book junkie and I'm enthusiastic about alot of them, but every now and then one comes along and takes your breath away and pulls you into its own little book bubble and makes everything in the real world fade away, for me THIS IS THAT BOOK." - Vicci

"This story gripped me, it held me captivated from page one." - Emma

"THIS book took me to an all new level of emotional heights and lows. It grabbed me and sucked me in with ease but then wouldn't let go, I spent days after carrying the story around with me and thinking about the characters." - Ashley

Book Description:

Counting Stars is an emotionally charged romance about love and loss – and learning to live after everything you’ve lived for has died.

I was with him for six years. Derek was my life, my future, and my dream come true. We had it all – the house, the cars, rings on our fingers, and we were even discussing a baby. Derek was my high school sweetheart, my lover, and my best friend.

Derek is dead.

At only twenty-two years old I am a widow. I’ve spent the last year of my life filtering through self-help books – searching for a way to heal the remnants of my heart.

I am broken.

It is my incessant searching that leads me to booking a month long trip with The Donnelley’s Wild Land Tour’s. I was supposed to tour with Gracie – but she is incapacitated and she’s left me in Logan’s care. If I could, I would turn and walk away from this tour. But I can’t. This is my last chance at learning to live again.

Logan doesn’t know I’m broken. When he looks at me, I feel strong again. I feel alive. He pushes me to learn new things, to experience new ways, and to fight. Logan, in all his bluntness has taught me to fight for what I want and what I believe in. I don’t know how it happened, but Logan picked up the pieces of my heart and helped me to rebuild it. In him, I’ve found acceptance in the hardest thing I had to face.

We all have a path, and for me, my path has been beautifully painful. I was fated; both blessed and cursed, to love two men with the entirety of my heart. Looking back, I wouldn’t change a day, because the pain of the lost life I had with Derek led me to the beautiful present I cherish with Logan.

***This novel does NOT end in a cliffhanger. It is a heartwarming romance for everyone who loves a happy ending. This is the first of four novels – each novel will feature a different Donnelley Brother. This can be read as a stand-alone but I do recommend reading the novels in order as characters from prior novels will appear in the later novels!***

All four Donnelley Brother Novels are currently available on Amazon!

The O.D. - An environmental science fiction novel by Chris James

KINDLE COUNTDOWN DEAL. $0.99 FROM FEB 19-26

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00KY8S4D8

The O.D. is about the threats and perils that face everyone on the planet  – over-population, climate change, water shortages – and what can be done to keep them from killing us all. The action takes place ten or twenty years from now, by which point the Earth will have reached its tipping point. The burning question then, as now, is ‘How can the ills of the world be effectively treated when countries can’t agree on the simplest of things?’ The answer is to create a base of influence outside the rest of the world that is free of history, culture, and political and religious dogma, thus enabling it to devise a solution that’s impartial and non-partisan – a solution the rest of the world can accept for this very reason. The ‘science fiction’ element of the book revolves around how this base of influence is realised.

The main characters of the story are Forrest Vaalon, an octogenarian American billionaire, and Lonnie Pilot, a Cornish tutor of seven-to-twelve-year-olds. An odd, but highly effective, mix.

The O.D. is not a niche novel for environmentalists. It’s for anyone who cares about what human beings are doing to their planet and to each other and who has the awareness and the imagination to see that the road we’re treading is taking us in the opposite direction of where we need to go. The ideas put forward in The O.D. are not ‘pie in the sky’. They’re attainable and make perfect sense.

Kelly's Koffee Shop - a cozy mystery by Dianne Harman

http://www.amazon.com/Kellys-Koffee-Shop-Cedar-Mystery-ebook/dp/B00PE26G7U

I love dogs, love to cook, and love to write. What a natural for me - a cozy mystery featuring a boxer named Rebel (yes, had a boxer named Rebel who is very much like the drug-sniffing boxer in this book), recipes (family tried and true), and lots of food! It all came together in a mystery that I was reading it as I wrote it. Really had no idea how it was going to turn out! What fun! And to think in January it was in the top 50 most popular books sold in KDP on Amazon. This is book one of the series and I just submitted the fourth book to my formatter! Enjoy!

On the Streets for Alison by Paul Matos, Jr.

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00O4ZQ1NW

Raphael Dawson and Conner MacClennen are D & M Securities and they are private investigators. They are very good at what they do, but have moments that keep them human. Their friend Sam came to them with a problem, his 20-year-old sister, Alison is missing and they hit the streets to help him and his family look for her. Along the way, they make more friends, run into some trouble, and uncover a mess no family wants to ever happen to them. As it turns out they fall into a world of Sex Trafficking that not only do they want to destroy, but more than anything they fight to find her before time runs out.  There is some humor and banter that only true friends can have, and an unspoken respect for each other that helps everyone around them understand why they have been friends for so long. The twist at the later part of the book shows that not only do they care doing what is right but they are willing to do whatever needs to be done to get there.

What would you do for a friend?

It was as much of a shock to them as the first surprise visit by police. The final indignation, the ultimate insult to them both, was Nathan's 1975 arrest.

As an interracial couple with two white sons, they had handled the disparaging looks and life's little harassments with aplomb.

The boys from her previous marriage understood. Lulie had  at last found the stepdad of her dreams, and for six blissful  years, they'd been married.

The cops told her nothing.

The Engine - an adventure novel by Richard Crist

The Engine will be free on Kindle from February 19, 2015 to February 23, 2015.

http://www.amazon.com/Engine-Richard-Crist-ebook/dp/B00NHA9X2Q

Returning to his childhood home, Dr. Robert Bennett rediscovers an enigmatic artifact that had sparked his imagination when he was a boy. Now, as an accomplished archaeologist, and once again intrigued by the object, he reinvestigates the rocky ledge where all those years ago he’d found the artifact, and makes a discovery that can change the world. He soon finds himself swept up in an adventure that takes him to the ends of the earth, pitting him against an insidious enemy and presenting him with awe-inspiring intellectual challenges.
My book is an archaeological adventure novel, with some romance, but it's also a philosophical novel, and contains actual lessons in logic, ethics and aesthetics (I have a Ph.D. in philosophy from the CUNY Graduate Center in New York City and have taught at Hunter College and City College in NYC, and at Ulster County Community College in upstate New York). The book is meant not only to be a good read, but also to serve as an introduction to my Truth Engine, which promotes a unique method of debate—I see debate as an important way that society thinks collectively, and the Truth Engine as providing the most powerful method of debate. There’s also a science fiction component in the book.

There are 89 full-color illustrations. I created the illustrations in The Engine using the 3D graphics programs SketchUp and Blender. (And I wrote a book on how to use Blender, called Blender Steps.) The first incarnation of The Engine was a browser-based video game I developed, and many of the book’s illustrations had their origin in that game.
For years I was a science fiction illustrator for Analog and Asimov's magazines.
I see the primary readers of my book as those who enjoy a good adventure story. And I see them as being intelligent, analytical-minded, and having an active interest in reason, morals and art.
In the book, Robert explores ancient buildings whose architectural design incorporates mysterious symbolic elements. These are elements that I developed over many years—since I was a boy, actually. Over the years, I realized more and more clearly how these buildings’ symbolic structures might be made to correlate with the complex structures of the Truth Engine, a device that emerged as the result my philosophical investigations into collective intelligence. I found that, eventually, both streams of thought, the intuitive and the discursive, came together easily for me, as if I had been unconsciously working on both together as a single project. I estimate that the actual writing of the book took two years, with editing and polishing taking perhaps another year.
The most difficult part of writing the book, by far, was the task of fitting together the logical, analytical parts—the “lessons”—with the expressive story-line. Some sections of the book went through many drafts, but I feel the lessons have now been seamlessly integrated into the narrative.
I chose to put an image of the house of Kholoruuf on the cover because this picture, which I created in Blender, conveys a sense of mystery. I think the image also connects with dream imagery, the house often symbolizing mind in dreams. Mystery evokes the desire for knowledge, a product of mind—I believe that the image, again, joins together the intuitive and the discursive.

Idealistic and ready for anything, Jolie follows Will into the eye of the hurricane, the 1960's counterculture.

Into Shadow by T.D. Shields

Free for Kindle, February 17-20, 2015!

As a full-grown adult, I love reading young adult fiction. So it only made sense that when I finally decided to start writing down the stories that are always running through my head, I would start by writing with the YA genre in mind. Don’t feel like you have to ignore the book if you’re a little older than the typical YA age range, though. It was released just yesterday, so no Amazon reviews are posted yet, but I’ve heard from readers ranging in age from 14 – 60+ that they are already hooked on the book and can’t wait to see what happens next.

“Into Shadow” takes a look at what the world could be like in another 200 years or so. There are high points (incredible advances in technology)… and low points (cities in ruins after years of world wars and climate change). In the middle of that we drop Poppy and watch as she deals with both the highs and the lows.

It’s a really fun read – action, excitement, politics, drama… and just a touch of (clean) romance. Give it a try!

Katydid - A Post-Apocalyptic Adventure Novelette by Popeye Theophilus Barrnumb

http://www.amazon.com/Katydid-Popeye-Barrnumb-ebook/dp/B00O6A76PW

Discover a strong female character in youthful protagonist 10-year-old Katy as she struggles to survive on her own in a post-apocalyptic world. Surrounded by innumerable dangers, wandering alone and lonely throughout a nuclear holocaust, with no one to turn to or rely on, Katy will fight to the bitter end to survive, if only because that's all she has left. Eventually, with fading memories, it is all she will ever know, as the months pass like years, and years like decades. So far, so good, even in a world prowled by the most dangerous animal of all: People. But what will come next?

The world created by this story is rife with peril, action, adventure, thrills, and personal growth and insights from the mind of a young girl forced to grow up faster than anyone should have to mature at such a young age. Katy's strength of will, determination, and perseverance serve her well in such a world and the unfortunate situations in which she finds herself, at no fault of her own. In reality, she has no choice in the matter. "Give up" is not in her limited vocabulary.

Will she survive? If so, at what costs? What will be the physical, mental and emotional toll of her journey? And what will she find at the end?

Although difficult to peg as a single genre, this medium-length novelette (13K words) has an overarching theme of post-apocalyptic survival, thereby Survivalist Fiction, with elements of Adventure, Thriller aspects, and perhaps Science Fiction in the sense that most post-apocalyptic stories could be described as such, but it could also easily fall under General Fiction. (as these things go, parts might also elicit a smile or small laugh)

The young girl is the primary character, but, as noted, the story is not for children to read, as it contains adult themes. By today's standards, it is probably barely PG, although some might consider it PG-13. "Katydid" is written for adults, but older, "world-wise" teens should have no problem, and it is hoped by the author that the strong female character will be an inspiration of sorts to everyone who comes into contact with her through his writing. (some younger teens and pre-teens, especially those with advanced reading levels, might be good candidates as readers, with parental guidance and pre-reading to verify the content is appropriate, and/or to be discussed afterward)

A free e-book "Kindle Single" short story prequel, "Bunny Blue: A Katydid Short", will be available soon. And the author is considering continuing Katy's story as a sequel novella or novel.

How To Meet Women In Public -- Get Off the Computer and Into Her Arms - Self Help by James Moreland

http://www.amazon.com/Meet-Women-Public-James-Morland-ebook/dp/B00BGJ347A

How To Meet Women In Public – Get Off the Computer and Into Her Arms is a serious, but common sense book. It presents effective techniques and approaches that can be adapted to many different situations. Perhaps as importantly, it is a guide to the psychology of behind such behavior. How the dynamics of the situation are affected by different personality types of both the man and woman is well explored. While not being sexist, it clearly sees the world through the eyes of a man.

A large part of this book is about taking risks and taking action. Reading about it is useful, but its usefulness stops at the end of this book. Doing is paramount. One way to think about this is just this: If you are not willing to risk a few bucks on one of the most thoughtful books ever written on this subject, why do you think you would have to guts to approach the woman of your dreams?
