I'm a young man on the autism spectrum, and Devin and the Greedy Ferret is my first book.  It's middle grade fiction, and the story is fast-paced and funny.  The characters don't explicitly have autism, but the book still shows a unique autistic voice that comes through the characters.  There are no other fiction books for kids (that I could find) written by someone with autism.  There are plenty of books by parents struggling with their autistic kids, and non-fiction books by adults on the spectrum.  And now, it's really popular to write fiction from the supposed perspective of someone with autism.  These are all well and good, but what if every book written about African-Americans was written by a white person?  People would be outraged!  Well, here is a unique book, and having your kids read this book will do more for their understanding of people with autism – their talents, quirks, etc. – than reading all the non-fiction books on it in the world.  Plus, if you are the parent of a child with autism, or you have a family member on the spectrum, I hope you will see me as a role model, to show that we autists can be successful, too!
