The Fitzgerald Family is caught in the crossfire between two nations. As the Union and Confederacy fight during Civil War, the border between North and South is the C&O Canal along the Potomac River.

Hugh Fitzgerald is a proud canaller who travels between Cumberland, Maryland, and Washington, D.C., along the canal to deliver coal. His family travels with him, living on their canal boat. His wife, Alice, and their children George, Elizabeth, and Thomas also serve as the crew on the boat that delivers Western Maryland coal to the ports at Georgetown near Washington, D.C.

However, as the Confederate Army takes the fighting into the north, the Fitzgeralds’ livelihood and lives are endangered. They face problems not only from the Confederate Army and Rangers who are trying to destroy the canal, but the Union Army that seeks to confiscate canal boats.

Then fate takes Hugh from his family, leaving his wife, Alice, to hold the family together and keep the canal boat running. She gets some help from Tony, an orphan from Cumberland, and David Windover, a disillusioned Confederate soldier.

Together, the group works to deal with the challenges and dangers the face on the canal.
