The Fifth Codex begins in Tulum, a Mayan archeological site in the Yucatan peninsula. Richard Woodson, a well-known archeologist, and his sixteen-year-old apprentice, Pedro a native Maya, find a journal that had been hidden in the ruins for hundreds of years. Woodson discovers the journal had been written by Gonzalo Guerrero, the first Spaniard to live among the Maya in the Yucatan Peninsula.

The Fifth Codex intertwines the possible experiences of true historical figures during the Spanish Conquest in Mexico with the actions of a fictional modern day archeologist and his native Maya teenage apprentice. The story has our modern day archeologist using clues from an ancient journal he discovered that leads to a mysterious fifth codex.
