Crash Course by Nicky McBride

http://www.amazon.com/Crash-Course-Shelf-Barker-Mysteries-ebook/dp/B006ZMLADS

A trans-Atlantic tale of murder and mayhem...told through the endearing dorkiness of the most eccentric detective since Monk.

UK driving instructor Shelf Barker has had his share of lousy jobs, from yoga instructor to university professor. He's had his share of lousy wives, too, one of whom he calls The Cobra. His current wife? Well, there's potential there, because at least she can cook a little. Indeed, the mild-mannered Brit has become quite fond of his wife's Italian-American specialties, from luganica to cannoli.

He's a bit less fond of her American family, who have an unfortunate habit of appearing on his Norfolk, England, doorstep at precisely the wrong moment, window-tinted Mafia staff car and all. And guns. In England? Well...yes.

The combination of British eccentricity and reserve with Italian-American brashness and bonhomie amounts to a prescription for humor, all the while masking the evil deeds discovered in the trunk of a learner car checked out to--of course--Shelf Barker.

The Intelligent Young Man's Guide to Life and Love - kindle book by The Smart Old Guy

The Intelligent Young Man's Guide to Life and Love - kindle book promotion by The Smart Old Guy
In 70 short chapters, the author (a/k/a The Smart Old Guy) teaches young men the lost art of being a superior person in trashy times.

Good advice for young men (as well as their parents and the women who want to understand them) presented without preaching, but rather with a lot of wit and style.

This one-of-a-kind book dares tell why it good to be a snob, how to deal with irresistibly reckless women, what weird books to read and bizarre films to see, and what four words will magically open any door----and must never be said!  It tells myths and stories you need to know: such as what to say when you meet a goddess and wise words from an ancient Greek on how to live by being ready to die. It has a lot to say about living in reality and not the fantasy world of our media culture. And, as they say, much, much more.

Grizwall - kindle ebook by Randy Dingwall

Is this book worth reading? You’re not the only one asking that question. So am I to tell you the truth..... My stories have amused and entertained my friends over the years so I believe these stories can be entertaining ...but the question is.... Can someone who considered English his worst subject in school write a book that people could understand let alone find amusing or entertaining?....I am hoping that it is possible, I made a effort believe it or not lol.

There is nothing deep or earth shattering in these stories they are written because I loved Grizwall, he was a dog everyone remembered and respected, that may sound like a funny thing to say but Hey, he was the Griz. These events took place in British Columbia Canada from Vancouver Island to the far North Region/Terrace/Nass and beyond. These stories are true except that Grizwall didn’t talk……much :)

If you enjoy the outdoors and animals you should enjoy these glimpses into a lifestyle not all get to experience. My hope is that my stories are entertaining and worth the read.

The Rebellion of Miss Lucy Ann Lobdell - Kindle ebook by William Klaber

The Rebellion of Miss Lucy Ann Lobdell - Kindle ebook promotion William Klaber
One day in 1855 Lucy Lobdell cut her hair, changed clothes, and went off to live her life as a man. By the time it was over, she was notorious. The New York Times thought her worthy of a lengthy obituary that began “Death of a Modern Diana . . . Dressed in Man’s Clothing She Win’s a Girl’s Love.” The obit detailed what the Times knew of Lucy’s life, from her backwoods upbringing to the dance school she ran disguised as a man, “where she won the love of a young lady scholar.” But that was just the start of the trouble; the Times did not know about Lucy’s arrest and trial for the crime of wearing men’s clothes or her jailbreak engineered by her wife, Marie Perry, to whom she had been married by an unsuspecting judge.

Lucy lived at a time when women did not commonly travel unescorted, carry a rifle, sit down in bars, or have romantic liaisons with other women. Lucy did these things in a personal quest—to work and be paid, to wear what she wanted, and to love whomever she cared to. But to gain those freedoms she had to endure public scorn and wrestle with a sexual identity whose vocabulary had yet to be invented. Lucy promised to write a book about it all, and over the decades, people have searched for that account. Author William Klaber searched also until he decided that the finding would have to be by way of echoes and dreams. This book is Lucy’s story, told in her words as heard and recorded by an upstream neighbor.

The Slow Train To Rishikesh - crime/detective novel by Sharan kumar Aruanchalam

Hi,

I am the son of some wealthy businessman but dropped out of college before getting my degree. Then I found out how hard the world can be without the proper qualifications. I was down to considering a position at Burger King, Mumbai.

Are you feeling sorry for me yet? No??

Well, in this crazy, mixed up world, I decided to follow my passions instead and wrote a book. It’s called The Slow Train To Rishikesh. If you buy it, you will spare me from flipping burgers, or worse still, from receiving forty lashes from my rich father, who begins to think I’m a derelict.

Thank you.

Synopsis - The Slow Train To Rishikesh :

With hints of Kipling and ancient Hindustan as a backdrop, The Slow Train to Rishikesh is a riveting tale of love and greed, set against the corruption of modern day India. When Hiresh, a thirty-something investigator for the Central Bureau of Investigation is ordered to abandon his vacation in Rishikesh and go investigate a minor poisoning incident in the city of Indore, he soon finds this minor incident has blown up into a full scale catastrophe, with shoddily run factories, hundreds of people dead from pesticide poisoning and corporate malfeasance everywhere he turns. As Hiresh has seen hundreds of times before, unchecked capitalism and systematic payoffs have combined with greed and negligence to place profits above the well-being of everyday citizens. Worse still, Hiresh’s investigation quickly leads him to a shocking conclusion. This poisoning incident appears to have been the result of a deliberate act. But why? And by whom? Hinted at but never fully revealed until later in the story, Hiresh has a dark secret in his past, a history that inexorably leads him back to just this sort of industrial accident.

It is on the journey from Rishikesh to New Delhi, and from New Delhi to Indore that Hiresh finds himself in the company of an idealistic young Brit named Chelsea, who works for Human Rights Watch and has been assigned by them to report on the same incident. Initially butting heads, these two disparate personalities from differing cultures are soon allies in an effort to thwart a cover up which leads to the very highest positions of power in India.

Along the way, we meet Uday, the suave, ever smiling but duplicitous government Minister who swears his only interest is in helping Hiresh to uncover the truth, and Muktananda, a charlatan religious leader who is forever championing the interests of the downtrodden, when in fact he has made a fortune by investing in the very companies by which the downtrodden are oppressed. A host of other bureaucrats join in, bickering and stumbling over themselves in an effort to catch Hiresh and Chelsea before the secrets they have learned see the light of day.

The Slow Train to Rishikesh is a spellbinding journey through the underbelly of Indian society, where deals are struck to save reputations, the public is deluded by a false sense of justice and the next industrial disaster is always waiting around the next corner. But this story is really about Hiresh and Chelsea, two young idealists who vow to go on fighting the good fight, even if the entrenched powers are forever trying to stack the deck against them.

The Pearl A spiritual story By JF Anstead

http://www.amazon.com/The-Pearl-JF-Anstead-ebook/dp/B00D5YM5N8

Two young girls experience the synchronicity of having the same dream. They are helped by an angel in the guise of a pilot. But what dread portent lies in the pearl.

Even for a religious person such as myself (or perhaps, especially for a religious person such as myself), it can be hard to get a handle on God, who is by definition unknowable. While I typically turn to the Bible for insight, it can be nice to read another perspective or try a different metaphor to supplement my scriptural reading.
The Pearl, by JF Anstead, is basically an extended metaphor. In this short story, two sisters share a dream at night involving a mysterious pearl, a man who wishes to steal it, and an adventure that must be undertaken to get it back. Other characters that populate the book are presented as those who wish to help the girls regain the pearl that has been lost. Through the story, the symbolism of the pearl is revealed, and the girls, still sleeping, learn important lessons about life’s path and choices.
The writing in this book is straightforward and the characters are not highly developed, but this may have been intentional to keep the focus on the book’s message. My favorite parts of the book were the descriptions of the “river of light” that flows in and around the story. It was easy for me to visualize this river flowing with tiny illuminated boats, each holding a gleaming pearl. I felt that the ending of the story was a bit rushed, and could have been better used in service of the overall metaphor. It was not entirely clear to be what religious tradition the author was drawing from, but perhaps that was intentional as well.
The Pearl is a quick read with a lot to consider, and would be a good book for a small group discussion around issues of faith, sin, and salvation. It definitely left a lasting impression on me.

Parallel Attraction - kindle ebook by Deidre Knight

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00GU5H0IO

What would you give to travel back in time and undo a mistake?

My book PARALLEL ATTRACTION follows Jared Bennett, an exiled alien king, as he hides out in the mountains of Wyoming. He’s fighting a deadly and destructive war against a dangerous enemy—but he has one important advantage: the ability to alter time.

This is what I feel drives the entire series. Our so-called mistakes, or choices we would rethink—it all plays out here. Jared’s cousin Thea is supposed to be his betrothed, but Jared quickly falls in love with the human geologist Kelsey Wells, leaving Thea heartbroken and vengeful. Their royal protector Marco’s own feelings for the new queen, Kelsey, cause a breach in his trustworthiness as well. It is here the fabric of time begins wrinkling, and when those who are supposed to be loyal to Jared use the time weapon in the future, their world comes barreling into the present.

Thea’s revenge, Marco’s regret, and Jared’s war all join together into the ultimate question of our actions. We ponder what drives our choices, how we deal with the repercussions, and what would happen were we given the power to change everything.

Inside/Outside: One Woman's Recovery from Abuse and a Religious Cult memoir book promotion by Jenny Hayworth

Inside/Outside: One Woman's Recovery from Abuse and a Religious Cult memoir book promotion by Jenny Hayworth
"Inside/Outside: One Woman's Recovery from Abuse and a Religious Cult_Jenny Hayworth.jpg"

Jenny Hayworth grew up within the construct of the Jehovah's Witnesses, which she describes as a fundamentalist, cult-like religion.  She devoted her life to it for over thirty years.  Then she left it.  The church "unfellowshipped" her- rendered her dead to those family and friends still committed to the church.

Hayworth is a sexual abuse survivor. The trauma changed her self-perception, emotional development, trust, and every interaction with the world.  Inside/Outside is her exploration of sexual abuse, religious fundamentalism, and recovery.

Her childhood circumstances and tragedies forced her to live "inside".  This memoir chronicles her journey from experiencing comfort and emotional satisfaction only within her own fantasy world to developing the ability to feel and express real life emotion on the outside.

It is a story that begins with tragic multigenerational abuse, within an oppressive society, and ends with hope and rebirth into a life where she experiences real connections and satisfaction with the outside world.

Those who have ever felt trapped by trauma or circumstances will find Inside/Outside a dramatic reassurance that they are not alone in the world, and they have the ability to have a fulfilling life, both inside and out.

I'm Not Resting, I'm Creating: The Power of POSITIVE Procrastination - Kindle ebook by John Rayburn

It has been widely considered that Leonardo da Vinci could possibly be the most diversely talented individual who has ever lived. He died nearly 500 years ago but one of his observations still rings true. “Every now and then, go away, take a little relaxation, because when you come back to your work, your judgment will be surer. To remain constantly at work will cause you to lose power of judgment. Go some distance away, because then the work appears smaller and more of it can be taken in at a glance, and a lack of harmony or proportion is more readily seen.
That ties in directly with the basic premise of this book, which also recognizes the slogan of the National Procrastinator’s club: “Don't wait. Procrastinate NOW!” as one means of handling time to your benefit and personal satisfaction.
The author interviewed clinical psychologists, governmental leaders and successful business people to arrive at ways and means of making the clock work more favorably for you. There are wise observations from such as da Vinci, Churchill, Einstein, Ovid, Sandburg and others. Join the "putter-offers" for success and happiness.
Since the 1700s we've been plagued by Lord Chesterfield's admonition, "Never put off till tomorrow what you can do today." This text refutes that with ways to manage time without letting it manage you.

The time merchant cafe - kindle ebook by Ronald G Mindzak

I enjoy reading books; getting immersed in a story is my favorite past time.  On occasion I do not have the hour or two I would like to spend getting involved in a book and so I look for something shorter.  Magazines can usually fill that slot, but short stories are my favorite quick reads.  With that in mind, I decided to create short stories that sounded interesting and could be read during a lunch break.  “The Time Merchant Café” is six short stories, each being independent except for the common thread of the waiter at the cafe.  These stories have a touch of mystical intervention, just enough to make them interesting without being overwhelming.  One of the reviewers called these stories “Twilight Zone Light” and I think that fits.  The stories do not unfold in the café but rather set the stage to change the course of the lives of the people that enter.  The café is only open for that particular person and once that person leaves, the café no longer exists at that location.  The waiter offers the patron a view into his or her future with the caveat that once they see their future, it is no longer fixed.  That premise sounds pretty simple and harmless, so why not take that look?  Everyone wants to know their future, will I be rich, famous, married, live a long life, and on and on.  Only good can come of knowing the future, right?  Once you read these stories would you accept the opportunity to get a glimpse of your future or would you simply enjoy the coffee, which is billed as the best coffee of any time?

The waiter at the café is sophisticated, convincing, and disconcerting.  He literally makes his living by the outcome in the change in life span of those that take that peek.  If in seeing their future, they manage to shorten their lives, the waiter extends his life by the number of years the patron has shortened his or her life.  If the patron extends his or her life, the waiter then subtracts that number of years from his accumulated total.  Currently the waiter has a nice backlog of years and will keep operating the café for many years to come or as long as readers find these stories enjoyable.

Matt Draper: From Riverboat Gambler to Frontier Banker -Kindle ebook by John Rayburn

The lead character is a former riverboat gambler turned banker, using a start-up fund of winnings and discovery of an abandoned Confederate gold cache at the end of the Civil War. As the war neared the end, the gold was intended to bolster the beleaguered southern forces. The funds could have prolonged the embittered battles in the “war between the states,” a term not much used at the time. Instead, northern forces called it the “War of Rebellion,” while southern counterparts termed it the “War for Southern Independence.” Foreign references labeled the conflict “War of Secession.”

Clashes with drunken cowboys aboard a train, staving off a stagecoach hold-up, a shootout with villainous holdovers from the bloodthirsty Quantrill’s Raiders, saving a child from drowning, thwarting a bank robbery and working in a cattle drive threatened by a coalition of farmers are some of the ingredients that were a part of settling the west as trains and telegraph began replacing stagecoaches and Pony Express counterparts. The ingredients are descriptive of the many problems that faced the country’s pioneers in the rugged “winning of the west.” Once again, the author relies on actual places and things to enhance the overall fictional saga. As the years pass, the story culminates with the 1906 San Francisco earthquake.

My best friend since elementary school, Trevor Larrson, is a handsome professional football player who was just traded to our local team in our hometown. Trevor always dated skinny girls who looked like models, not girls like me. When he moved back and sparks started to fly between us, it was a dream come true. I had lusted after Trevor for a long time. I didn't think a curvy girl like me would fit into Trevor's world, but the way he looked at me said that wasn't true at all.

I felt feelings I had never felt before in my life when I was with him. He made me feel special and beautiful. It was because of him that I was able to become the person I am today. When I started to see myself through his eyes stunning transformations started to take place. When we crossed the line from platonic friends to lovers, our relationship took a turn that scared me as I had never felt these types of feelings for anyone. When circumstances and misunderstandings arose, I did the only thing I knew how to do - I ran. That one split second decision was instrumental in changing my and Trevor's lives forever.

Bug Stuff...and Other Stories - Kindle ebook by Vicki Batman

I've written a lot of short stories and am always, always asked, "Where do you get your ideas?"

Sometimes, it's in the smallest things. Sometimes, it's in what someone says. Sometimes, it's taken from a real event and fictionalized. I've put together a short story collection and each one began in a different way.

In "Bug Stuff," I walked into the kitchen one evening and Handsome remarked there was a big bug in the sink, scurrying around. I said, "Kill it." He said, "I can't. Bug guts everywhere." My head could not let go of the "Bug guts everywhere," especially from my big strong man who likes to shoot guns and played rugby in college. The phrase had to go in a story.

From "Just Desserts," Handsome dragged me to a political dinner. We met a lot of people we didn't know and probably would never see again. As we moved from the salad course to the entrée, a woman across from us left our table, not to return. The man to her right snagged her plate and ate her food as well as his own.

I was astonished. I had never, ever seen anyone do this in public before. I looked at Handsome and his face had the same look as mine. And the man continued on! He took the dessert from the man to his right after he left the event, too. This bothered me so much, I had to fictionalize it, too. The results are too funny.

Sometimes, Handsome takes me to his college alumni events. We had just returned from an out of town trip and had one night at home before leaving the next day. With an early departure time, I had to pack quickly. Once at our destination and in the hotel, I unpacked and discovered I'd forgotten my little black dress!! I had to go shopping in a college town for something to wear because not going was not an option. The result is "With This Ring."

Bug Stuff…and other stories: Three short and sweet romantic comedies ~ "Just Desserts": a political dinner gone disastrous brings together a reluctant attendee and her handsome seat-mate. "Bug Stuff": A cute accountant unites with his co-worker to fight a pesky adversary. "With This Ring": When a wife forgets her little black dress, all turns into something utterly romantic and unforgettable in the end.

Great story and an interesting read, especially if you love American Football. I must admit I know little about the sport, however, the story of Amy & Harry held me captivated right up to the end. As a new author, Michael seems to speak from his heart and you can see traces of his roots by the way he writes. Looking forward to any new books and hoping to see the characters again.

A Life Singular by Lorraine Pestell

"A Life Singular" is a six-part serial by Lorraine Pestell, a British Australian currently living in Melbourne, Victoria. She is a longstanding sufferer of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, with all its associated symptoms, and is hoping that her books will broaden the understanding of mental illness through the universal appeal of a love story set in the sparkling world of celebrity.

Part One, released in June 2013, tells the story of a successful showbusiness star and philanthropist who has risen above childhood abuse and his own mental scars to enjoy great fame and fortune. When the love of his life is murdered by a rogue gunman, he decides to write his autobiography.  Part One starts the journey back through his spectacular life.

Lorraine seeks to attract readers from all age-groups and walks of life. Her goals for the serial are: first, to inspire fellow sufferers of mental illness to triumph over their symptoms; and second, to encourage non-sufferers to tolerate, support and even love us in our efforts to life a 'normal' life.

A recent review illustrates this perfectly:  “There is a so much happening in what is a beautiful story about life and love. Even more appealing than your typical love story is how the author has embedded into the storyline some of the more difficult social questions that we often avoid, making it more intellectual than your typical love story.”

The original story running through all six "A Life Singular" books has been under development for over 35 years, with most of the hard graft in the last 5 years. Part Two was released in December 2013, with the aim of producing the remaining parts at six-monthly intervals. By releasing the final part at the end of 2015, the story will end in contemporary times.

Each part is inspired by a classic European novel, Part One's being "La Rabouilleuse" ("The Black Sheep") by Honoré de Balzac.  Growing up in London, with the diversity of Europe on her doorstep, Lorraine brings her love of languages and cultures into her writing, and hence when titling the serial, opted to put the adjective after the noun, as in most Latin-based languages.  The books are about a life. Everyone has a life. It's the type of life which makes it significant. A Life Singular:  one, unique, extraordinary.

Many of the author’s own experiences served to shape this novel, having struggled to persevere through depression and suicidal tendencies.  One of her greatest pleasures while writing was to set particular scenes in some of the places she has lived, especially showcasing Melbourne, Australia, for its diverse population and multitude of arts, music and sporting communities.

The whole serial spans a period of almost fifty years, which has resulted in an interesting exercise  in retrospection in terms of technology, particularly for Lorraine, who is an IT professional by day.  “A Life Singular - Part One” is set in 1996, when mobile telephones were becoming popular, text messaging was in its infancy and DVDs were in the process of replacing video cassettes.  The phenomenon of cameras in ‘phones was only just beginning to impact celebrities, who up until that point had been able to limit their exposure to the paparazzi.

Lorraine continues to derive considerable energy from the process of writing this serial.  Along with her 14-year-old dog and volunteering her time for non-profit organisations, she credits the ability to finally publish this story with keeping her alive.  It is her sincere hope that these books will help others in her position to make a success of their lives and help us all to exist more harmoniously with different kinds of people.”

The Ebonite and Her Earthling, kindle ebook by Sunshine Somerville

"The Ebonite and Her Earthling" is Book 2 in The Kota Series.  This sequel continues the story of the Kota Warriors as they find themselves in a new world and learn to cope on a planet fighting for colonization against the native Kynajabi beasts.  Told mostly from the perspective of Cliqani, a native Ebonite, we see the Warriors in a whole new light as they are reintroduced to new eyes.

Part suspense, part action, part mystery, this story takes on a new tone from Book 1 and lays the course for the rest of the series.  The deeper significance of the power within the Kota Warriors is revealed, and we begin to see how everything ties together in a way that directs their overall mission.

Not exactly anti-war, but there is a hint of commentary about the treatment of veterans, soldiers, and natives subject to colonization.
Great for fans of "Alien", "Dune", "Speaker for the Dead", and "Space: Above and Beyond."
Recommended for ages 15 and up, for violence and mild language.

Jennifer Ainsley: The Final Demon War - kindle ebook by Sidney Stone

KDP Countdown promotion begins January 27th and runs until February 2nd

Jennifer Ainsley: The Final Demon War is a contemporary tale that is a gripping, fast-paced fantasy/horror novel grounded in the modern world but starting at the beginning of time. The book deftly tackles issues of greed, humanity's neglect for its weakest members, the race for power among individuals and nations, and the ability of love and courage to transcend personal weaknesses. The characters are extremely likable and engaging, and I successfully incorporate a great deal of humor into the book, despite its often grim and macabre themes.

The book details the struggle between humanity and demons who have forsaken the Underworld to live among men while plotting to use our own technology to destroy us. The demons are fallen angels who have been in existence since the beginning of time worshiping and admiring God and his creations but were then cast out as they continually destroyed nascent worlds out of petty jealousy. They are mortal now but blessed with supernatural powers and extraordinary long life. They can also give this life to others who due to lust of power and greed work with the demons to undermine our civilization.

Jennifer Ainsley is the adopted daughter of billionaire Jonathon Tait. Jonathon has visions that Jennifer may be the only person who can wield the one weapon that can redeem us.

"Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword"

- Matthew 10:34

As Jonathon Tait states: "Some people misinterpret that as allegory. Some people reject his message and react violently. He was really saying that he indeed brought a motherfucking sword—the Sword of Jesus."

Jennifer is trained unknowingly with the skills to be a warrior until one horrifying night her destiny is thrust upon her. The novel then becomes a thrilling chase until the end as Mankind races to save itself while the demons implement their plan to kill us all.

This story's themes are love, loss, sacrifice and redemption. It was inspired by my love of the early works of Stephen King and Dean Koontz and was written over the course of almost two years. Copy edited by professionals with an expert cover design by Pencilbox Studios, this engrossing story will captivate readers from the mid-teens on up. The plot clips along at a fast pace and is highly original; the action scenes are especially well written and engaging. This is a book destined to find a wider audience.
